Childminding Qualifications You Actually Need Before You Start

There's a lot of noise online about childminder qualifications, much of it from training providers with an obvious interest in selling you more courses than you strictly need. Here's a clearer picture of what's actually required versus what's genuinely optional.

What's required before you register

Requirements are set by your regulator (Ofsted in England, the Care Inspectorate in Scotland) and can be updated, so always confirm the current list before booking any course. That said, the core requirements that have applied consistently are:

  • Paediatric first aid: a course specifically covering infant and child first aid, not a generic adult first aid course. See our dedicated first aid guide for what this actually covers.
  • An introductory childminding or early years training course: covering the early years framework you'll work under (EYFS in England), safeguarding basics, and health and safety fundamentals. Often delivered by your local authority or an approved training provider.
  • Safeguarding/child protection training: sometimes bundled into the introductory course above, sometimes a separate module. Either way, you need to be able to demonstrate a working understanding of your safeguarding responsibilities before you register.

What's not legally required, but worth having

  • A relevant childcare qualification (such as a Level 2 or 3 in Early Years, or equivalent) isn't a blanket legal requirement to register as a childminder, though some local authorities or agencies may encourage or require it, and it can strengthen a parent's confidence in your setting. Check your local authority's specific expectations.
  • Food hygiene training: not always a hard registration requirement, but strongly recommended if you're preparing or serving food to children, and often expected in practice.
  • SEND awareness training: useful if you want to confidently support children with additional needs, though not a blanket requirement for general registration.
  • Business and bookkeeping courses: genuinely useful given you're running a self-employed business, but entirely optional from a regulatory standpoint.

PACEY and other membership bodies

Organisations like PACEY (Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years) offer training, membership, and support specifically for childminders, and some childminders find real value in the resources and community they provide. Membership isn't a legal requirement, but it's a genuinely popular option; we cover the pros and cons in our separate guide on whether PACEY membership is worth it.

A word on ongoing training

Qualification requirements don't stop once you're registered. Paediatric first aid certificates typically need renewing every three years, and your regulator will expect you to keep your safeguarding and other knowledge up to date through continuing professional development. Build refresher courses into your calendar in advance rather than scrambling when a certificate is about to lapse.

Don't let course confusion delay you

A common trap for people researching this is spending weeks comparing training providers before booking anything. In practice, any course approved by your local authority or regulator will meet the requirement, since the content is broadly standardised even if delivery style and price vary. Pick an approved provider with availability that fits your timeline and book it, rather than over-researching a decision that has a fairly narrow range of correct answers.

Once your training is booked and registration is underway, GoChildmind can get your parent contract and policy documents ready in the meantime, so they're not the thing holding you up.

Qualification requirements are set and reviewed by your regulator and can change. Always confirm the current required courses directly with Ofsted, your local authority, or the Care Inspectorate before booking training.
